1. Who came up with the idea of chemical symbols and formulas?
From where did the idea of using symbols in formulas come? Why were chemical
symbols and formulas thought to be necessary? What different systems have
been used for chemical formulas in the past? Conduct an Internet search
to obtain answers to these questions. It might also be helpful to correspond
through e-mail or talk in a web discussion site with a chemist. Prepare
a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

2. Who determines what symbols should be used for an element? How is it
determined? Who determines which scientist first discovered an element when
there is a dispute? How is it determined? Two chemists conduct tests to
find the values of certain properties of a new element, such as density
and melting point, and the two do not agree. How is it determined which
chemist is correct? Conduct an Internet search to obtain answers to these

to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

Activity 9E – Use a word processing
program to make the two-column table as directed in this activity. As
you read the sections, take your notes on the computer. Write your rules
in the left column before you read and the new rules you learn in the
right column from the reading on page 200. Discuss these rules with a
classmate. Transfer the document to a presentation program; then use your
table for the class to compare results. Print the document, and secure
it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook.
