Chapter 4

Internet

Automobiles today recharge the battery and provide electricity for accessories by the use of an alternator. Older model autos use a generator to perform the same function. Conduct an Internet search to find our what the difference is between an alternator and a generator and how each works. Prepare a multimedia presentation to share your findings with your classmates. Below is a web site to get you started:

Application Software

Activity 4A – Use a word processing program to make the two-column table as directed in this activity. Record your observations in this table as you follow the procedure in this activity. Transfer this document to a presentation program, and share your results with the other students in the class. Print the list and chart, and secure them in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.

Probeware

Activity 4D – Use magnetic field sensors connected to either a computer or calculator in place of the small compass. Place the magnetic field sensors in the locations around the wire as directed in the activity, and the computer or calculator application software will record the field strength and direction in a data table. Print the data table, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.

Activity 4E – Use magnetic field sensors connected to either a computer or calculator in place of the small compass. Place the magnetic field sensors in the locations around the coil as directed in the activity, and the computer or calculator application software will record the field strength and direction in a data table. Print the data table, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
