Science Probe II Technology Activities
Chapter 17
Internet
1. Conduct an Internet search about the Human Genome Project,
whose purpose is to identify what every human gene codes in human reproduction.
Determine what has been learned so far about the human genetic code, and
prepare a presentation for your classmates that show each known gene’s
coding. Below is a web site to get you started:

2. Conduct an Internet search about a genetic disorder such
as Down’s syndrome, diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, or some
other disorder with which you or your teacher are familiar. Find out what
current research has learned about the disorder, if it is known which
gene is responsible, what percentage of offspring are likely to develop
the disorder if only one parent carried the trait, and what type of treatment
is being considered for the disorder. It might also be helpful to correspond
through e-mail or talk in a web discussion site with a biologist or geneticist.
When you are satisfied that you have obtained sufficient information to
answer all your questions, prepare a multimedia presentation to inform
your classmates of what you have learned.
Application Software
Activity 17D – Use a word processing
program, and key your answers to the questions raised in this activity
before you read the text. As you read the sections on Mendel, take your
notes on the computer. When you have completed the section, write the
letter to Mendel on the word processor with your additions to his hypothesis.
Print the letter, and share it with your classmates by transferring it
to a presentation program so all of them can see it and provide input
on any changes they might make to the letter.
