1.You have learned that electroplating is valuable in providing protection from corrosion on metals. When a metal is electroplated, the metal to be plated, or protected, is made the cathode. A process called anodizing is when a metal is made the anode, in order to give metal a protective coating. Conduct an Internet search to find out about anodizing, including:

a. What metal(s) it is used on?
b. What solutions are used for anodizing?
c. What chemical reaction takes place during anodizing?
d. How do it protects the metal?
e. Are they any other pertinent information needed to understand the process?

Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned. Below is a web site to get you started:

Aluminum Anodizers Council: What is Anodizing? http://www.anodizing.org/html/anodizing.html

2. Over 90 percent of all used lead-acid batteries are recycled in the United States. Conduct an Internet search to find out more information about the recycling of these batteries. During your search, look for answers to these questions:

a. How is the lead removed from the electrolyte in the battery?
b. What chemical reaction occurs to remove the lead from the electrolyte?
c. What is done to the lead electrode to make it reusable?
d. What role does the government (local, state, or federal) play in the recycling procedure?

Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

Application Software

Activity 11A – Use a word processing program to set up the two-column table as directed in this activity. Complete the first column by yourself. Then discuss this column with your group, making changes in the column as necessary. As you read the sections in this chapter, take your notes on the computer. When you have completed the chapter, transfer your notes to a presentation program and share with classmates what you have learned. Print the document, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook.
