Chapter 8

Internet

It is popularly said, "Smoking is bad for you." As scientists, we need experimental evidence to prove any claim; we cannot just take someone’s word for it. Use an Internet search engine to find current experimental evidence (within the last five years) that shows how smoking affects our bodies and overall health. Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned. Use bibliographic citations of the sources in your class presentation. Below is a web site to get you started:

Application Software

Activity 8B – Use a spreadsheet program to make your data table that includes "At Rest," "After Bag-Breathing," "Average at Rest," and "Average after Bag-Breathing." Use the mathematical functions of the spreadsheet to do the calculations for finding the average breathing rate before and after breathing into the bag for all volunteers. Print the final spreadsheet with all calculations, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.

Activity 8E – Use a spreadsheet program to make your data table as shown in this activity. Record the data in the spreadsheet as you perform the activity. Use the mathematical functions of the spreadsheet to do the calculations for finding the vital capacities of the students in your group. Use the graphing function to plot a bar graph of student and vital capacity or some other values as directed in step 6 of this activity. Use this graph to share your information with classmates. Print the final spreadsheet with all calculations, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
