Science Probe I Technology Activities

Chapter 5

Internet

1. Select one household product for which the ingredients are not listed on its label. Perform an Internet search to determine:

a.What are the ingredients of this household product?
b.How should it be stored?
c.Is it toxic or not?
d.What is the proper disposal method of this product?

Prepare a presentation for your classmates that will help them handle this household chemical properly. Below is a web site that will get you started:

EPA's Envirofacts Warehouse Chemical Search http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/emci/chemref/index.html

2. The computer industry uses acids and bases in the manufacture of microchips, disk drives, cases, and monitors. Contact a computer manufacturing company through the Internet. Ask for answers to these questions:

a.Where are acids and bases used in their manufacturing processes?
b.Which acids and bases are used in their manufacturing processes?
c.What steps are taken to dispose of the acids and bases without having an environmental effect?

It might also be helpful to correspond through e-mail or talk in a web discussion site with a chemist or someone who is familiar with the manufacturing process at the company. Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

Application Software

Activity 5D – Use a database program to make your data table (Table 5.3). All fields should be entered as text fields. Take notes in the database as you perform the activity. Use the sort function to group together all items you have called an acid and all you have called a base. Print the completed database, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
