Chapter 2

Internet

The Law of Conservation of Mass is a scientific law that has been known for a long time. As a matter of fact, it was first proposed by a French chemist, Antoine Lavoisier. Conduct an Internet search to find out how it is used in the chemical manufacturing industry or some other similar industry. Chemists use this law to predict how much and how many products they can expect from a chemical reaction that is used to make a consumer material such as gasoline, pharmaceuticals, or plastic. As an alternative, you could search for information about the experiments performed by Lavoisier that demonstrated to him the Law of conservation of mass. Prepare a poster, a collage, or a multimedia presentation that communicates the use of this law in industry to your classmates. Below is a web site to get you started:

Application Software

Activity 2B – Use a database program to make your data table. All fields should be created as text fields except "Procedure step," which should be a number field. Display the database file in the List View, which allows you to see the important parts of the file all at once. Take notes in the database as you perform the activity. Use the sort function to group each physical state (solids, liquids, and gases) together. Save this sort and then use the sort function again to group by the type of change, either physical or chemical. This allows you also to see the characteristics of physical and chemical changes. Print the two sorts, and secure them in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.

Activity 2D – Use a spreadsheet program for a class data table, as shown in Table 2.4 of this activity, in which all students may record their data. Use the mathematical function of the spreadsheet to make all calculations of mass difference and the average difference for all groups performing the activity. Transfer the document to a presentation program, and present the findings to your classmates. Print the data table, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
