Internet Biolab
Getting Online for Information on Diseases
There are two main categories of disease, infectious and noninfectious. Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens. These diseases, like the common cold or AIDS, are said to be communicable because they can be passed from one person to another. Noninfectious diseases are not caused by a pathogen. These diseases, like cancer or arthritis, are said to be noncommunicable because they are not passed from one person to another.
Preparation
Problem
How can you use the Internet to obtain current research information on different diseases?

Objectives
In this BioLab, you will:

  • Choose five communicable and five noncommunicable diseases for study.
  • Use the Internet to gather information.
  • Collect data on the ten diseases and record in a table.
Materials
Access to the Internet

Data Sources

Skill Handbook
Use the Skill Handbook if you need additional help with this lab.

Procedure
1. Print the two data tables below.

2. Choose five communicable and five noncommunicable diseases you wish to investigate.

3. List the diseases in your data tables. Try to make your disease choices as specific as possible. For example, cancer as a topic is too broad. Instead, limit your choice to a specific type of cancer, such as breast cancer,

prostate cancer, or Hodgkin's disease.

4. Go to Data Source under Preparation to find links that will provide you with information for this BioLab.

5. Be sure to complete the last two rows asking for current research findings and your sources of information. Go to Data Sources under Procedure to find links that will provide you with information for this BioLab.

Analyze and Conclude
1. Defining
What is a pathogen? Provide several examples.

2. Comparing
Describe the difference between a communicable and a noncommunicable disease. Provide several examples of each.

3. Thinking Critically
What are vectors? Are they associated with communicable or noncommunicable diseases?

Explain your answer.

4. Applying Concepts
Explain why the table for noncommunicable diseases does not have a column for organism responsible or method of transmission.

5. Using the Internet
What is one advantage of getting information on disease research by way of the Internet rather than from textbooks or an encyclopedia?
