Domestic Dogs Wanted
Dogs make great companions. They provide their owners with an opportunity to love and nurture another living thing. In return they are loyal, offer protection to their owners, and are fun to have around. Dogs come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. However, all these different breeds have the same basic dog characteristics. Unfortunately, sometimes dogs are abandoned or run away from home. Many of these unwanted and stray dogs end up in animal shelters where they can be adopted by new owners.
Preparation
Problem

  • Observe the characteristics of dogs.
  • Record the popularity of different dog breeds.
  • Use the Internet to collect and compare data from other students.
  • Compare the most popular dog breeds with the most common breeds found in animal shelters.
Materials
Computer access to the Internet

Data Sources

Skill Handbook
Use the Skill Handbook if you need additional help with this lab.

Procedure
1. Print a copy of both data tables.

2. Visit the Data Sources under Preparation to find Internet links to sites that rank the most popular breeds of dog. Also find links to animal shelters and pet adoption agencies.

4. Find pictures of these dogs and record the physical characteristics unique to their breeds in Data Table I.

5. Go to Data Sources under Preparation to find links to five web sites of animal

shelters and pet adoption agencies across the country. Many of these sites post pictures and other information about the dogs that are up for adoption.

6. From your data, determine which breeds are most commonly found in animal shelters. Record the five most common breeds in Data Table II.

7. Find pictures of these dog breeds and record their unique characteristics in Data Table II.

Analyze and Conclude
1. Using the Internet
Compare the data in Tables I and II. Are there similarities? How might you explain any similarities or differences? Consider the time of year, the age of the dog, and any breeds of dog that may be popularized by television or other advertising while formulating your answer.
2. Thinking Critically
Are there any breeds that are popular as pets that are commonly found in animal shelters? Propose an explanation for this.

3. Comparing and Contrasting
What characteristics do domestic dogs have that are the same as all other carnivores? As all other mammals?

4. Problem Solving
Propose a local program to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs.
