Introduction
Thanksgiving celebrations have been held for thousands of years. The universality of the celebration was reflected in the many examples of thanksgiving that happened in early American history. From El Paso to Florida to New England, ceremonies were held giving thanks for supply and protection. It was the New England tradition of thanksgiving that lent the most to what became the American holiday that we celebrate in November. Many Americans give thanks for their blessings, often in a religious way, but the holiday also calls to mind other traditions. The national holiday makes many think of the Macy's Day Parade, football, and, of course, food. Obviously the holiday has evolved from its origins in the 1600s. The following Web sites will describe some of the various aspects of American thanksgiving that have developed over the years, from what happens at the White House to how different ethnic groups observe the holiday.
