Chapter 29: The Civil Rights Era
"The Women's Rights Movement"

Introduction
In this chapter you have read about the movement to ensure equal opportunity and equal treatment for all Americans. Many well-known heroes led the fight for civil rights—Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks. Others are not as well-known but were also important in the fight for equality. The struggle for equal treatment for women is also part of the civil rights movement. In this activity you will learn more about important individuals and accomplishments in the women's rights movement in the last 50 years.

Start at the National Women's History Project home page.

Click on Enter.
Click on the tab at the top of the screen titled The Learning Place.
In the menu on the left of the screen, click on Women's Rights Movement.
Click on the red button titled History of the Movement.
Scroll down and read the sections titled "The Second Wave" and "New Issues Come to the Fore."

Use what you have learned to answer the following questions.

1. Who was Esther Peterson? What did she accomplish?

2. What did Betty Friedan write? What effect did it have?

3. What was the significance of Title VII?

4. What was the significance of Title IX?

5. Choose one aspect of the women's rights movement and create a script for a television news story and interview with an important women's rights leader. If possible, work with a partner to videotape an interview and show it to your class.
